In this episode, we delve into the origins of coffee in Ethiopia and how knowledge of the perfect flavour has been passed down through the generations. We’ll also see how this knowledge is spreading through social media and how a community is growing that is increasingly discerning about flavour and quality. We’ll speak to Wilford Lamatus Jr., who has taken up the torch from over five generations of coffee farmers and has upheld his family’s tradition of coffee cultivation; we’ll see how James Hoffmann, a former world barista champion and arguably the world’s best coffee YouTuber, talks about and educates people on coffee with millions of views on each video; and we’ll be with musician Jaxon Mraz, and how he became a farmer alongside his whole family after winning two Grammys.

Wilford Lamastus, Jr., the multiple champion of the Brewers Cup in Boquete, Panama, is a renowned coffee producer at Lamastus Family Estates.
He is also the owner of Sisu Coffee Studio, a speciality coffee micro-roaster based in Panama City.
The Lamastus family has been producing coffee at Elida Estate for four generations, since 1918. The coffees are produced under ecological conditions unique in the world: they are grown in the shade, alongside birds; the estate is situated at a very high altitude, in a microclimate with very low temperatures; the coffee trees are surrounded by Barú Volcano National Park —a pristine native cloud forest.

Wilford Lamastus

Singer, winner of 2 grammy awards. He left the stage to dedicate himself full time to growing coffee with his family. Today he is one of the most recognized specialty coffee producers in the USA.

Jason Mraz

English barista, famed YouTuber with 1.4 million subscribers, entrepreneur, coffee consultant and author. Hoffmann is the former 2007 World Barista Championship winner.
